The History of Conklin & Rorick
Conklin & Rorick Religious Shop was established in November of 1952, by Mrs. Ruth Conklin and Mrs. Evelyn Rorick, step-mother of Mrs. Conklin. Opening a religious shop had always been a dream of Mrs. Conklin, who at the time was a busy mother of five children. Mrs. Conklin and Mrs. Rorick with $500 between them and the support of Mr. Conklin, (an employee of American LaFrance) rented a small space in the front of a house located near the downtown area of Elmira, New York. They purchased about $400 worth of merchandise and had a grand opening. Part of Mrs. Conklin's dream was to put the store in God's hands and if He wanted it to succeed it would. The store was thought of as a mission, a place to shop, a place to share faith, or just a place to come to if you were feeling lonely and needed to talk.
Mr. Conklin always did the book work and all the behind the scene operations. When he retired, he became a major part of the store and it's success. Mr. Conklin and Mrs. Rorick are now deceased. Mrs. Conklin retired many years ago. The store is now owned by two of her daughters, Mrs. Judy Cruise and Mrs. Helen Sullivan, and her granddaughter Deborah Turner. Mrs. Conklin continues to thank God that the store is still run for His honor and glory. There have been many (beyond chance) happenings attributed to the success of Conklin & Rorick Religious Shop. Please continue to look for updates of our Website and I will share with you some of the Miracles that God has done to keep this store open over the past forty-seven years. These stories will be under our story section. |
